JOB PURPOSE:



Viatel are seeking an experienced Network Engineer to join our Network Development Team – working with other departments to provide the infrastructure to deliver services such as Voice, Wireless and Fibre Powered connectivity and new product development.



This is a key role within the business with a key focus on our IP infrastructure and services and the position will be one of a team responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the company's platforms, the associated network connections and component hardware, as well as contributing to the wider responsibilities of the Network Development Team.



PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



• Network and service architecture, design and implementation across all Company activities and services, including customer networks.

• Implementation of network and customer projects covering initial feasibility, design, test and rollout including interaction with vendors and internal resources

• IP administration and liaising with Internet bodies and similar.

• Company and customer network and infrastructure security – design, implementation, testing, reporting and maintenance.

• Deployment and maintenance of hosting, broadband, and managed services infrastructure including servers, routers, switches, firewalls, cabling, customer equipment, backup devices and similar components.

• Provide an escalation point for the Viatel NOC in support of both infrastructure and customer services

• Administering, monitoring, and optimising networks, services, and servers.

• Programming, and scripting as required to improve efficiency of area.

• Reporting, planning, administration, analysis relating to network and service activities of the company as required.

• Support the sales and pre-sales team in Customer proposals.

• Assist in the upskill of other people within the business preparing technical documentation



REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE:



Candidates should ideally have minimum of 4 years’ experience in an ISP or carrier environment, with direct experience of customer-focussed support, alongside network equipment deployment and service creation.



• Solid background in network administration and architecture

• Candidate must have practical and hands-on understanding of Cisco and/or Juniper equipment (routers, switches and firewalls) with particular emphasis on management and provisioning of complex IP/MPLS Service Provider and broadband access networks. Experience in datacentre networks a significant advantage.

• In-depth understanding of TCP/IP networking, architecture & core technologies/protocols such as MPLS, BGP, IS-IS, OSPF

• Experience with Linux (Centos or Ubuntu preferred) essential.

• Solid understanding of Radius, Syslog, DNS and PPPoE essential.

• Knowledge of coding languages for scripting (e.g. Python, Perl, PHP, Bash) essential.

• Experience with open source automation tools (Ansible, SaltStack, NAPALM) a significant advantage.

• Experience in using open source network management tools such as Nagios/Icinga, Cacti and Rancid/Oxidized a significant advantage.

• Familiarity with configuration and troubleshooting of SIP and TDM voice services beneficial, and in particular experience with Cirpack VoIP technologies an advantage.

• Experience with hypervisor environments (ESXi, Xen) will be beneficial.

• Must be able to participate on an on-call team roster system for out of hours support.

• Must be comfortable dealing with customers on a technical level to resolve pre- and post-sales issues promptly and to Customer’s satisfaction.
